SALT LAKE CITY -- The rush of traffic from the 2002 Olympic Games is pushing one Salt Lake City tech company to amplify telecommuting abilities.
IKANO Communications is using the Olympics to test Internet technology it develops.
More than 100 of IKANO"s 350 employees will telecommute using high-speed wireless Internet access, instant messaging, e-mail, Web cams for meetings, and telephones during the 17-day Olympics.
"Working from home will give us an opportunity to determine the potential time efficiencies gained and maintain employee loyalty," said Henry Smith, IKANO CEO.
Telecommuting is not new. Among documented cases, BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina reported a 50 percent increase in overall efficiency with telecommuting, IKANO officials said.
This effort is viewed as a test for future IKANO work-at-home operations. "If the program is successful, we plan on implementing a part-time telecommuting program for employees," said IKANO President and Chief Operating Officer Garth Howard.
IKANO is the official data networking services supplier for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
