IKANO Press Releases:
Title:
IKANO Acquires Dial-up and Residential ADSL Assets of
Honolulu-Based Internet Service Provider INETS
Date: October 26, 2004
For Release: IMMEDIATE
IKANO Offers National Presence and an Expanded Range of Features
Salt Lake City (October 26, 2004) - IKANO Communications, the world’s largest provider of private-label Internet services, has acquired the dial-up and residential ADSL subscriber base and certain related assets of INETS, a Honolulu-based Internet company providing Internet access to customers in Hawaii. IKANO will continue to provide services to the acquired subscriber base. INETS will continue to operate its other business units, including corporate ISP, network integration, development, and training. INETS will continue servicing its corporate ISP customers.
While there will be several enhancements to the Internet service, the price will remain the same and all set-up fees will be waived. In addition, IKANO will provide Internet service to The Hawaii Government Employees Association (“HGEA”) members, a labor organization whose members include public employees in the State of Hawaii. Previously, INETS provided Internet services to HGEA's members as part of HGEA's member benefit program, and now IKANO will continue the partnering arrangement.
“Our business model and goal is not only to keep local ISPs in operation, but to strengthen them and allow them to flourish within the local or regional market in which they operate,” said Henry Smith, president and CEO of IKANO Communications. “This acquisition will give subscribers the cost advantages that have been afforded to IKANO while maintaining the local ISP appeal.”
As a result of this agreement, subscribers will now have available to them a sizable array of features and services that were not previously offered. Subscribers previously had access to six dial-up numbers in local Hawaiian cities, but now they have access to the nationwide IKANO network featuring over 3,400 unique dial-up locations (20,000+ local access numbers) throughout the U.S. and Canada. Subscribers will also have the option to add more e-mail accounts than they could before the transaction with more storage space per account. In addition, each account now includes 100 MB of personal web space and access to the PageProducer Web page creation tool, two features that were not previously offered.
Another key feature of the new services is the new 24-hour free technical support provided by IKANO’s award-winning call center. Prior to the acquisition, the customer support facility was only available during limited hours, Monday through Saturday. Now, subscribers can call in at any time of the day on any day of the year to receive customer service, technical support, or billing assistance. Plus, the service that they receive is from a call center that has received the prestigious “Call Center of the Year Award” from Call Center Magazine.
Other complimentary features that are available to subscribers include the optional ProxyWatch content filter that blocks objectionable web page content, the new Instant Messenger client, a fully customizable portal page with news, weather, and calendar options, and free high-speed Wi-Fi access to any of the 200+ hot spot locations on the nationwide HOTSPOTZZ network. Customers can also sign up for the high-speed BrowseBlast Web Accelerator that accelerates browsing speeds by up to 6 times (just $2.95/month).
“We feel that this acquisition will be immediately beneficial to INETS’ dial-up and residential ADSL subscribers,” said Jae Chong, president, INETS. “Many small ISPs are being forced out of business by larger competitors, but this agreement will allow IKANO to continue offering the service that our customers have come to expect for years to come.”
