IKANO Press Releases:
IKANO Heralded for Data Network Performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter and Paralympic Winter Games
Date: April 8, 2002
Release: IMMEDIATE
SALT LAKE CITY – You may not have heard of IKANO Communications but if you read a news story, watched television coverage or even heard who won the gold in any sport at the 2002 Olympic Winter and Paralympic Winter Games the last two months, then IKANO touched you. As the Official Data Networking Services Provider for the 2002 Olympic Winter and Paralympic Winter Games, every piece of data large and small passed through one of the world's most complex networks without a single interruption.
"From the perspective of SLOC upper management, the Admin Systems and Network Group has hit a 'Grand Slam Home Run'! The systems and network have worked exceptionally well!" said Kerry Brewer, Director of Network & Systems Management, SLOC.
“These Olympics relied upon IKANO to deliver world class performance on the network system operations and they exceeded all expectations. Their management of the Olympic network was superb,” added Dave Busser, SLOC Chief Information Officer.
At the 2002 Salt Lake Games alone there were 32,000 miles of optical fiber cable connecting 5,000 workstations and PCs, 450 servers, 1,210 printers, to 15 million web site visitors, 2,300 IT professionals, and 800 information terminals used by the media, coaches, athletes and Olympic officials. Achieving 7/24 uptime, IKANO demonstrated its expertise in delivering a high-performance network infrastructure, with built-in redundancy and experienced staff.
After this extraordinary task IKANO then transitioned the entire network to support the Paralympic Winter Games where 400 outstanding athletes from 36 countries transcended their physical disabilities to compete in 95 world-class medal events. Shifting a network of this size and complexity was no trivial task. For example, the Main Media Center network was moved from the Salt Palace to the E- Center location where its data capabilities were reconfigured and expanded. Also many of the event locations required a different network setup to support the Paralympic Winter Games’ unique sports and scoring.
"The transition went extremely well and we were fully prepared for the Paralympics. Once again we were on time, on target and all systems were continually available!" said Bob Donohoo, IKANO Senior Network Engineer.
“Participating in the Olympic Winter Games as a supplier has truly been a world-class experience for IKANO,” said Henry Smith, IKANO CEO. “The performance of the Olympic network provides us with a wonderful success story to share with our clients.”
