IKANO Press Releases:
Title: IKANO Implements Innovative Telecommuting Program to Enhance Productivity During the Olympic Games
Date: February 4th, 2002
For Release: IMMEDIATE
SALT LAKE CITY - With less than a week before the 2002 Olympic Winter Games begin, Salt Lake companies are looking for creative ways to maintain business efficiency while facing fears of heavy traffic and security road closures. Imagine cutting your commute from thirty minutes to less than thirty seconds during the Games. If you worked for IKANO Communications, that's what you could look forward to this week.
IKANO Communications sees the Olympic Games as a golden opportunity to utilize its Internet technology products to increase employee productivity by sending them home. Throughout the duration of the Games IKANO will conduct a test to determine the total efficiencies gained by telecommuting using its advanced high-speed wireless broadband access and related services. The outcome may permanently change the way IKANO does business.
Using its leading-edge technology, IKANO will equip approximately a third of its 350 employees to work from home using a combination of communications devices including high-speed wireless Internet access, Instant Messenger, e-mail, Web cams for personalized virtual meetings, and of course, the telephone. IKANO believes fast Internet connectivity is key to ensuring the continued efficiency of its telecommuting employees. Each employee will connect through a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or high-speed wireless.
IKANO has built and deployed its wireless infrastructure throughout Sale Lake City and Park City, Utah. Wireless broadband uses electromagnetic airwaves to communicate information from one point to another without relying on any physical connection. IKANO's fixed wireless product provides throughput speeds up to 11 Mbps -- anywhere from 10 to 20 times faster than DSL or cable modems.
"We are always looking for innovative ways to increase productivity, decrease costs and provide employees with a flexible work environment. Working from home will give us an opportunity to determine the potential time efficiencies gained and maintain employee loyalty," said Henry Smith, IKANO Chief Executive Officer.
Many companies have implemented telecommuting programs to increase efficiency and provide flexibility to employees. One of the best-documented telecommuting cases is BlueCross Blue Shield of North Carolina, which achieved a 50 percent increase in overall efficiency. IKANO hopes to utilize its networking technology to experience similar increases.
"Our hope is that by implementing the telecommuting test program, IKANO will gain increased employee productivity while providing flexibility and innovation in meeting employee and customer needs during the Olympic Games," said Garth Howard, IKANO President and COO. "If the program is successful, we plan on implementing a part-time telecommuting program for employees."
Aside from the implementation of its telecommuting program, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games will serve as a monumental experience in the company's history. IKANO, the market-leading provider of branded Internet services, is the Official Data Networking Services Supplier for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. IKANO is Utah's only local technology supplier for the Games.
