IKANO Press Releases:
Title: IKANO Telecommuting Program Yields Productive Results
Date: April 3, 2002
For Release: IMMEDIATE
SALT LAKE CITY – During the Olympic Games, IKANO Communications ran a
competition of its own pitting in-office work performance against
telecommuting using its advanced high-speed wireless broadband Internet
access. The outcome has permanently changed the way the company conducts
business.
Using its leading-edge technology, IKANO equipped approximately a third of
its 350 employees to work from home using a combination of communications
devices including high-speed wireless Internet access, Instant Messenger,
e-mail, Web cams for personalized virtual meetings, and its unified
communications phone system.
The winner in the first round: telecommuting. All departments participating
in the program realized a 15 – 20 percent gain in productivity. These
promising results have spurred the company to roll out a permanent
telecommuting program for qualified employees. Initially, employees will
telecommute 1-2 days per week. IKANO will continually monitor the results,
make enhancements, and potentially allow employees to work from home even
more frequently in the future.
“We are very pleased with the results of the telecommuting test program,”
said Henry Smith, IKANO Chief Executive Officer. “IKANO’s communications
devices, especially the high-speed wireless access, Instant Messenger and
e-mail, were absolutely essential to making this program a success.”
Many of the efficiencies realized during the telecommuting program can be
attributed to the elimination of interruptions, using technology to
multi-task, and having more focused and quiet work time.
IKANO’s creative team experienced encouraging results from the telecommuting
program. “As a designer, having a quiet place to get inspiration helped
improve and speed up the design process,” said Josh Child, Web Designer. I
feel that the work from home program proved to be successful for the
creative team because we stayed focused, organized and motivated.”
Garth Howard, IKANO President and Chief Operating Officer, is equally
optimistic. “We learned a lot from our telecommuting test program and we
will continue to share our experiences, monitor results and make
modifications as appropriate,” said Howard.
Aside from the implementation of its telecommuting program, the 2002 Olympic
and Paralympic Winter Games served as a monumental experience in the company
’s history. IKANO, the market-leading provider of branded Internet services,
served as the Official Data Networking Services Supplier for the 2002
Olympic Winter Games. The IKANO-managed Olympic network performed
flawlessly, turning in a gold-medal performance.
